June 2,2008 Gold rush Byway

Yesterday we arrived at our campsite in Kamiah,Id for 2 days. It is called Lewis and Clark Resort. Not that great of a camp especially not a resort. We wanted to see the area so it was ok for 2 nights. Today we were going to take the gold rush historic byway. We followed the river and climbed up the hills to the town of Pierce. In 1860 gold was found on the Nez Perce reservation and this triggered yet another treaty reducing again the reservation. The oldest building in Idaho is the county courthouse completed in 1862.
Here is a view from above the river.
We also went to see Dworshak Dam. Right across from our camp is Heart of the Monster. It is a spiritual place for the Nez Perce. It is told that a Coyote slew a terrible monster whose death resulted in the creation of the Nez Perce. The center of the rock is the heart and the smaller out crop is the liver.
Beautiful sunset of another beautiful day.
