Apache Trail March 03,08

We arrived at Tortilla Flats and had lunch there before continuing on. Tortiila Flats began as a stage stop in 1904. There is the Superstition Saloon and restaurent and all the walls are made of dollar bills. A fun stop along the trail.

After our lunch break we continued on the road which then becomes dirt. There is beautiful scenery along the way and several lookouts and lakes.

Another pic of the road ahead. Finally we reached Roosevelt Dam and lake. The dam was completed in 1911 a year before Az. became a state. The lake is beautiful and well worth a drive on the Apache Trail.
Picture of bridge and lake.
The last stop was Tonto Nat'l Monument and we hiked up to the cliff dwellings. The Salado people lived here for 300 years before abandoning in the 1400's. This was a great day trip and I hope you all have the opportunity to drive the trail if your in the area.
